We Offer Fall & Winter Service Plans
Ever since the dawn of the swimming pool era, the tendencies have been the same: maintain the pool during summer & ignore it during winter. Many home owners don’t understand the dangers that Cold Temperatures bring to your backyard oasis. If only they knew the truth, they would try their hardest to prevent the onset of bacteria, algae, scale & corrosive water conditions. Luckily, maintaining your swimming pool during the winter doesn’t have to be a hard process. Just like all other things in life, a little effort goes a long way toward a happy pool & savings in your pocket.
What Happens During Winter?
To understand what your water does during the cold winter season, we have to go back to the basics of water chemistry. All swimming pool water requires a state of balance. We calculate the balance of your water via a formula called The Langelier Saturation Index. Commonly referred to as the LSI Index, this formula let’s us know whether your pool water is Corrosive, Balanced or Scale Forming.
Using The Tools
There are multiple tools on the market today that help calculate the LSI Index of swimming pool water. The example above was accomplished by using the Orenda Technologies app (found in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store). We also have a Lamotte Spin Lab in our retail store. Both tools lead to the same result: helping us identify the balance of your swimming pool water.
Poor Chemistry: Your Pool Plaster & Equipment
Okay, enough school talk. What really happens if my pool water is not balanced? We’re glad you asked! All water requires a state of balance (i.e. Saturation) to be satisfied. Regardless of your effort to keep your water properly balanced, it has the ability to remove elements from your pool surface or equipment – or – to deposit elements onto your pool surface or equipment. This concept is fairly simple and all goes back to “balance” (do you like how we keep bringing that back up?).
Corrosive Water Conditions
Following this concept of the LSI Index, if your water has a LSI score of -.3 or lower, your water is too Corrosive. Corrosive water leads to etched pool surfaces (that’s bad for pool plaster) or etched & stripped pool equipment. In essence, your water can literally start to eat away at your pool plaster & equipment.
If this is allowed to continue its coarse for too long, your water will strip copper from your heat exchanger; leading to high metal count. Secondly, your pool plaster can become brittle and start to crust off of your pool wall.
If you haven’t checked lately, a new pool heater can run anywhere from $2,800 – $4,000 and new pool plaster from $10,000 – $20,000. That’s not a bill that we want you to pay so that’s why we’re providing this free educational article!
Scale Forming Water Conditions
On the flip side of the LSI scale, if you’re water is too high with an LSI score of +.3 or higher – you’ve got Scale Forming conditions. If this is allowed to exist for too long, you can develop calcium buildup and other forms of scale on your pool plaster & inside of your equipment.
This causes reduced filtration due to higher pressure from inside of your equipment. Pumps can break, heaters won’t fire on, & your pool plaster becomes rough & scaly. That’s yucky and can require a complete replacement of your entire equipment pad. Oh yeah, new pool plaster may be required as well.

We still want to help you prepare your swimming pool for the period of dormancy it’s about to enter into. It’s vital that we prepare your pool to shut down with a healthy level of:
- Leaf Removal

- Chemical Dosages
Cold Water = Corrosive Water
If you take a moment to re-examine the Orenda App shown above, you will notice the first line: Water Temperature. As we will demonstrate in the example below, Cold Waters lead to more Corrosive conditions! In fact, if we plug in the same numbers as the first example (listed above) but drop our water temperature down from 80 degrees to 50 degrees – we nearly double the Corrosive nature of our water!
Now we don’t know about you, but this is a frightening picture of what happens all around the Wichita Falls region. For our customers that choose to neglect their swimming pools during the winter season, you are speeding up the time frame until your next Re-Plaster or Equipment Replacement. Now, don’t get us wrong, that’s our bread and butter – but why would we want our customers to experience such a financial hardship if the solution is so simple – Regular Pool Service!
Correcting Our Cold Water Conditions
As you can tell from the example of our Orenda Technologies app above, reducing our water temperature by nearly 30 degrees Fahrenheit nearly doubles the Corrosive nature of our water! That’s frightening and yet preventable.
If you go back to our very first paragraph in this article, we remind you about the “State of Balance” that all pool water requires. The LSI Index helps us identify the state of our water balance and then helps us to correct it. In the instance above, colder conditions led to a LSI score of -.86. By simply boosting our pH up to 7.8 (up from 7.4) & Calcium up to 350 ppm (up from 120 ppm), we bring our water back to a state of balance.
Now these calculations require advanced knowledge of volume & dosages. However, it also gives a great overview of how Corrosive conditions (which naturally exist during Winter) can be prevented.
